The Steinegg Ruin, a hilltop castle, stands on a ridge near Bonndorf-Wittlekofen. It is now a freely accessible example of medieval architecture in the southern Black Forest.

History+

The origins of Steinegg Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was built by the Lords of Steinegg, who served as vassals of the Dukes of Zähringen. After the extinction of this noble family, the castle passed into the possession of the Nellenburg family. The complex changed hands several times until it was finally destroyed in 1525 during the turmoil of the Peasants' War – a fate it shared with the nearby Roggenbach Castle.
