Steinerburg Castle (Ruin) (Steinach)

Steinerburg is located in Obersteinach and was built around the 12th century, primarily from boulders. With its fields, forests, and vineyards, it belonged to the possessions of the Nobles of Steinach. Today, the castle is a well-visited ruin.

The castle site is located south of the village of Steinach, on the edge of the gorge through which the Steinach flows.

A Bliger von Steinach is first mentioned in Piacenza in 1194. However, it is unclear whether this refers to a resident of Steinach am Bodensee. By 1209 at the latest, a Rudolf von Steinach was a vassal of the Bishop of Constance. This suggests the castle was built in the 12th century. The castle, along with its remaining land, passed into the ownership of St. Gallen Abbey in 1577. The castle was auctioned off after the dissolution of the abbey. The upper story, built in half-timbered style, was demolished in 1833. In 1975, the structure was renovated under the direction of the cantonal monument preservation.

The castle has fallen into ruin. Of the main building, three surrounding walls remain; the east wall is missing. Gothic window frames are found in the walls.
