The remains of the Castle can be visited

The ruins of Steinsberg Castle, a former hilltop castle, are perched on a prominent rocky outcrop east of the village of Ardez in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It is a typical example of an early medieval church castle, which once included a curtain wall and a church.

History+

The first documented mention of Steinsberg Castle dates back to 1209, when Albert von Frickingen sold his property, including the castle, to the Bishop Reinher della Torre of Chur. In 1228, Count Albert of Tyrol renounced his claims, after which the Diocese of Chur established an episcopal court at Steinsberg. Due to financial difficulties, the castle was pledged to the von Planta family in 1348 and later, around 1400, came into the possession of the bailiffs of Matsch.
