The Stockenfels ruin, a 14th-century site, stands on a granite hill in the Regen Valley near Fischbach, a district of Nittenau. This site was once the center of the Stockenfels dominion.

History+

The construction style of the surviving building parts suggests an origin around the mid-14th century. Duke Ludwig the Strict and his successor, Duke Ludwig IV, later Emperor Ludwig the Bavarian, are believed to be the builders. The latter even had the castle equipped with its own chapel. After Emperor Ludwig's death, Stockenfels frequently changed owners, including some predatory lords. In 1351, ownership passed to the patrician family Auer, originally from Regensburg.
