Stöffeln Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Stöffeln Castle date back to the 12th century, when it was built by the noble free lords of Stöffeln. The location was already mentioned in the year 1055 under the name Stofola. Towards the end of the 13th century, around 1300, the lords of Stöffeln were forced to sell the castle and the associated town to Count Eberhard of Württemberg. In 1388 the castle was destroyed during the War of the Cities by Reutlingen and subsequently fell into disrepair. The first archaeological investigations took place in 1885, followed by further excavations in 1930 under the direction of Konrad Albert Koch.
