The Stromberg Ruin, the only hilltop castle in Münsterland, stands on a hill in the Beckum Hills, in the Stromberg district of Oelde.

History+

The origins of Stromberg Castle are attributed to Charlemagne, who founded monasteries in the region around 800 and had fortifications built to protect them. The first documented mention of the Burgraves of Stromberg occurred in 1177. The castle belonged to the Bishop of Münster and served to protect the southeastern borders of the diocese. From 1177 to 1463, it was administered by the Burgraves from the Rüdenberg family.
