Tachenstein Castle (Ruin)
The castle ruin Tachenstein, also called Dachenstein, is a castle ruin in the municipality of Riedenburg in the district of Kelheim in Bavaria, Germany.
The castle ruin is located directly west of the core town of Riedenburg in the eastern part of the Altmühltal Nature Park on the southeast-facing spur of the Jägerberg at about 440 to 450m above sea level. Below the wooded ridge, the Altmühl, a tributary of the Danube, flows through Riedenburg.
The hilltop castle was probably built by the Counts of Riedenburg, or their heirs, the Wittelsbachs. By the 16th century, the castle had already fallen into disrepair. Of the former castle complex, the 10-meter-high ruin of the keep, built of ashlar masonry on a base of about 7.5 by 7.5 meters, behind the former shield wall, and the neck ditch carved into the rock, are still preserved.
