Tellenburg Castle (Ruin) (Frutigen)
The Tellenburg ruin is above the municipality of Frutigen in the canton of Bern. The medieval castle complex, originally built in the 12th century, once served for the strategic monitoring of the important Lötschenpass.
History+
The construction of Tellenburg around the year 1200 is attributed to the Barons of Kien. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the fortifications underwent extensive expansions. In 1400, the entire Frutigtal came into Bern's possession, whereupon Tellenburg was designated as the seat of the Bernese bailiff. The castle underwent a change in 1798 when it was converted into a poorhouse. The complex fell victim to a fire in 1885.
