The Old Mint in Stolberg (Rhineland)+
A building with history+
The Old Mint in Stolberg (Rhineland) is a historic building that has undergone many changes throughout its history. Originally built as a residential house, it later served as a mint, then as a residential and commercial building, and finally as a ruin. Today, the building is a listed monument and is being extensively renovated.
From residential house to mint+
The exact construction date of the Old Mint is not known, but it is estimated to be around 1540. The building was originally built as a residential house and was probably owned by a wealthy Stolberg family. In 1687, the building was acquired by the Stolberg-Stolberg countship and converted into a mint. Here, coins were minted for the countship until 1718.
From mint to ruin+
After the mint was closed, the building was used as a residential and commercial building for many years. In the 19th century, it was acquired by the entrepreneur Matthias Leonhard Schleicher, who established a brass factory there. In the 20th century, the building fell into disrepair and was eventually left as a ruin. In 1983, the Old Mint was placed under monument protection.
The current renovation+
In 2015, the Old Mint was acquired by a private investor who began an extensive renovation. The goal of the renovation is to preserve the historic building and to make it usable again. The renovation is expected to be completed in 2024.
The building today
The Old Mint is an important monument of Stolberg's history. It is a testimony to the city's rich past and a symbol of its continuous development. After the renovation, the building will be used for cultural events and exhibitions.
The ruin is privately owned.
