The Thannstein Ruin is on the outskirts of Thannstein in the Upper Palatinate Forest. This castle complex, whose origins date back to the early 14th century, continues to shape the landscape of the region.

History+

The first documented mention of a noble family of Thansteiner occurred in 1218, although their original ancestral seat, Altenthannstein Castle, was located about two kilometers to the west and is now only preserved as a castle site. The "new" Thannstein Castle visible today was built in the early 14th century by this ministerial family and subsequently served as their main residence. In 1353, the castle passed into the possession of a branch of the Zenger family.
