Treuchtlingen Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Treuchtlingen Castle likely date back to around 1100. The first documented mentions of individuals associated with Treuchtlingen appear from 1095 and 1125. From 1229, lords “von Treuchtlingen” emerged as Staufer ministerials. The family later split into the “Ulrich” and “Wirich” lines. In 1340, Ulrich and Wirich von Treuchtlingen acquired the castle from the Marshals of Pappenheim, becoming its owners. The “Obere Burg” lost its importance in the 15th century after the moated castle in the valley was sold to the Pappenheimers, and it began to fall into disrepair. It served as a quarry for new constructions.
