Turmhügelburg Castle (Ruin)

Leinroden Motte-and-Bailey Castle, also known as Roden Castle, is a castle ruin south of Leinroden, a district of the municipality of Abtsgmünd, on a castle hill on the slope of the Leintal valley in the Ostalbkreis district in Baden-Württemberg.

The castle was built in the 12th century, and in 1147, an Odalrich de Roden was first mentioned as its owner. Other owners mentioned include the von Pfahlheim family in 1354, the von Zipplingen family in 1369, the von Rechberg family in 1377, the von Woellwarth family in 1409, Baron von Uechtritz in 1815, Dr. Walter Schuster in 1910, and Mrs. Gertrud Weise-Andreae in 1933. Today, the castle is privately owned.

The castle hill of the Staufer-era motte-and-bailey castle has a height of 15 to 20 meters. The keep, with its ashlar masonry, has a height of 20 meters, a 6-meter-high entrance, and a base area of 8.5 × 8.5 meters, and is preserved to half its height. The timber-framed superstructure dates from the 16th to 17th centuries. The moat is preserved.
