Uda Castle (Ruin) (Oedt)

Uda Castle is a medieval castle ruin in the Oedt district of the municipality of Grefrath on the Lower Rhine. It was built around 1300 by Dietrich Luf III of Cleves, Count of Hülchrath and Lord of Kervenheim and Oedt.

In 1348/49, it served as a defensive fortification for the Cologne Elector Walram of Jülich against the Duchies of Jülich and Geldern. In 1560, extensive repair work was carried out by Johann von Brempt. In 1643, following the Battle of the Kempen Heath, it was rendered indefensible due to fire and demolition by Hessian troops and subsequently served as the official residence of Oedt, before being blown up by the French in 1757. Excavations at the castle were carried out in 1959 and 1961.

Today, only one of the round towers, the foundations, and remnants of the masonry, from which joints are detaching, remain. The castle complex, located near the Niers, is considered a landmark of Oedt and serves as an event venue.
