Unspunnen Castle (Ruin) (Wilderswil)

The origins of Unspunnen Castle date back to the early 12th century, when it was likely built as a round tower by the Lords of Rothenfluh. The name Unspunnen probably has Celtic roots. In the late 12th century, Baron Burkhard von Unspunnen expanded the complex with an upper palace. After his involvement in a rebellion against the Zähringer around 1191, the castle passed to Rudolf II von Wädenswil through the marriage of his daughter Ita. In the 13th century, the Barons of Eschenbach took possession of the castle and carried out several expansions. Walter IV von Eschenbach-Schnabelburg sold the complex in 1306 to the sons of Albrecht von Habsburg.
