Uznaberg (Uznach)

Settlement in the region around Uznach dates back to the Neolithic period, and Roman finds indicate early fortifications. Uznach itself was first documented in 741. In the 12th century, the area came into the possession of the Counts of Toggenburg, who founded the town of Uznach around 1200 and built Uznaberg Castle. This served to secure their possessions in the Linth region and to control trade traffic over the Graubünden passes. The Toggenburgers were in feuds with the city of Zurich and other noble families. During the Regensberg Feud in 1267 or 1268, the castle is said to have been besieged and destroyed by Zurich troops under Count Rudolf von Habsburg, although the exact circumstances of its destruction are not unequivocally documented historically. The castle was not rebuilt after its destruction, and its stones were used for the construction of surrounding churches and later for pressure water pipes. Systematic excavations to fully explore the complex are still pending.

The Uznaberg ruin is situated at an elevation of approximately 481 meters above sea level in Uznach, in the See-Gaster district, canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland.

The remaining wall fragments of the Uznaberg ruin are accessible to visitors and can be explored. Some artifacts from the castle, including horseshoes, arrowheads, and oven tiles, are displayed in the local history museum in Uznach.
