Vehlefanz Castle (Ruin)

The origins of Vehlefanz Castle may date back to the Askanian settlement period, with an artificially raised hill, the Bosselberg, serving as the site of an early German castle. Whether this complex served as the residence of Knight Buchard von Vehlefanz, mentioned in the 13th century, is not certain. In 1355, Kopke von Bredow acquired the village, which by 1375 at the latest passed into the possession of the von Redern family. They had a new moated castle built, as the old high castle had presumably become uninhabitable. A battle occurred in 1412, when Burgrave Friedrich VI of Nuremberg, later Elector Friedrich I of Brandenburg, defeated the Pomeranian dukes here.
