Veringen Castle (Ruin)
Veringen Castle is the ruin of a hilltop castle on a high mountain ridge, surrounded by the Lauchert river, behind the parish church of the town of Veringenstadt in the Sigmaringen district of Baden-Württemberg.
The hilltop castle was presumably built by Count Marquard von Veringen between 1100 and 1130 and was mentioned in 1134. Around 1200, the castle was redesigned using bossage masonry and the residential tower was rebuilt. In 1344, Count Heinrich von Veringen sold the rights to the castle and town, along with the associated villages, to Counts Eberhard and Ulrich von Württemberg. In 1464, the castle was repaired by Hans von Werdenberg, and further construction work took place in 1487. In 1633, the castle was destroyed by the Swedes under General Horn.
From 1978 to 1983, the remains of the ruin were secured.
Description+
The castle complex, together with the town, formed a fortified unit and can be divided into two construction phases. In the 12th century, it was a simple complex with a tower, half-timbered buildings, and a palisade enclosure. In the second construction phase, around 1200, the complex was rebuilt using bossage masonry, the tower was enlarged to dimensions of 15.30 by 16 meters with a wall thickness of 3.30 to 3.50 meters, and expanded into a heated residential tower.
The late Romanesque castle chapel of St. Peter, with its rectangular interior and semicircular apse, is the only completely preserved part of the castle.
