Vernaburg Castle (Ruin) (Verne)
Vernaburg Castle, also known as Krewetburg, is the ruin of a moated castle in the Verne district (Krewetstrasse 3) of the city of Salzkotten in the Paderborn district of North Rhine-Westphalia.
The castle was founded in 1607 by Wilhelm von Krewet, from a prominent Paderborn ministerial family (burgmanns of the Bishop of Paderborn).
The castle played a significant role in the Thirty Years' War during the siege and destruction of the town of Salzkotten. After the extinction of the von Krewet family, the castle lost its importance and fell into disrepair. In documents from the Seven Years' War (1756–1763), the castle is mentioned as a ruin; the keep and a residential building had been demolished, and the moat filled in. It was not until 1990 that a round Gothic residential tower was discovered near the ruin.
