The Wagegg Ruin, once a castle complex and later a palace, is on a hill near Wilpolsried in Bavaria's Oberallgäu region. The site offers a view of the surrounding landscape.

History+

The first documented mention of Wagegg Castle dates to around 1170. Originally owned by the Lords of Wagegg, who served the Prince-Abbey of Kempten, the dominion fell to the abbey in 1374. After several changes of ownership, including the Lords of Schellenberg and Eisenburg, the castle came into the possession of the Laubenberg family in 1469. In 1525, it was captured by rebellious farmers. In 1580, the Prince-Abbey of Kempten reacquired the complex, after which it increasingly fell into disrepair after 1581. From 1642, it underwent makeshift repairs as a hunting lodge, which was then expanded into a Baroque palace with gardens and ponds from 1715.
