In the Tirschenreuth district, on a basalt cone, stands the Waldeck Ruin, one of the oldest castle complexes in the Upper Palatinate. Its history is marked by changing owners and wartime events.

History+

The Waldeck Castle was first documented in 1124. Originally owned by the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg, a portion of the castle and the surrounding lordship was sold to Duke Ludwig of Bavaria in 1283. The remaining parts of the lordship, including Weißenstein Castle, went to Burgrave Friedrich III of Nuremberg. Until 1698, the castle served as the seat of the Waldeck-Kemnath regional court.
