The remains of the Castle can be visited

South of Eltmann in the Haßberge district, on an outlier of the Steigerwald forest, lies the Wallburg ruin, a former spur castle. Of the former administrative castle of the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg, topographical features and the keep remain today.

History+

The name “Wallburg,” documented since 1303, indicates an earlier rampart system, whose deep ditch the high medieval castle later utilized. In 1316, the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg pledged the Wallburg to Dietrich von Hohenberg. Subsequent pledges led to Dietrich Fuchs fully acquiring the complex in 1404, although the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg exercised its right of repurchase in 1477. During the Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was damaged but subsequently repaired. After further pledges, the fortress served as an administrative seat from 1570. Prince-Bishop Julius Echter initiated renovations at the end of the 16th century.
