The remains of the Castle can be visited

East of the identically named district in the market town of Presseck in the Bavarian district of Kulmbach stands the Wartenfels ruin. Of the former spur castle, only the remains of a round tower are preserved today.

History+

The construction of Wartenfels hilltop castle took place in 1327 by Knight Reiwein von Wartenfels and his two sons Heinrich and Friedrich. This undertaking received the approval of Bishop Heinrich II von Sternberg of Bamberg. Five years later, in 1332, the builders received the funds from Bishop Werntho von Bamberg to appoint a priest for their castle chapel. In the 15th century, the castle was granted further ecclesiastical privileges. An imperial immunity for a delimited area around the castle is documented for the year 1421. The castle suffered destruction twice: first in 1444 during the Waldenfels Feud and again in 1525 during the Peasants' War.
