Weilerburg Castle (Ruin)

The Weilerburg was first mentioned in a document in 1225, when an "Albertus, dominus de Rotinburc" mediated a dispute. It is believed that the castle already existed in the mid-12th century and was built by the free lords of Rotenburg, possibly a collateral branch of the Counts of Dillingen. By the 13th century at the latest, the castle came into the possession of the Counts of Hohenberg. The later Queen Anna of Habsburg, born Gertrud von Hohenberg, is said to have spent her childhood here. After the Hohenbergs built a new court castle in Rottenburg, the Weilerburg lost its significance and was probably only used for residential purposes. In 1381, the Hohenbergs sold the castle to the Habsburgs. According to tradition, it was destroyed in 1407 during a raid and only partially rebuilt afterwards. In the 15th and 16th centuries, it fell into disrepair and was temporarily used as an inn.
