The Weissenau Ruin, a medieval castle complex, rises on a former island at the confluence of the Aare River and Lake Thun. Located in the municipality of Unterseen in the Canton of Bern, it is considered the largest and best-preserved of its kind in the Bernese Oberland.

History+

In the 13th century, Weissenau was built as an imperial castle to secure and monitor the trade traffic over the Alpine passes. At that time, it was owned by the Barons of Wädenswil. The first written mention as "castrum de wissenowe" occurred in 1298. The founding of the nearby town of Unterseen in 1279 led to the economic decline of the castle.
