Weissenburg Castle (Ruin) (Därstetten)

West of Därstetten in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland, is the Weissenburg Ruin, a former medieval castle. It was once the ancestral seat of the Lords of Weissenburg.

The origins of Weissenburg Castle date back to the 13th century. Its first documented mention in 1278 identifies it as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Weissenburg. This noble family controlled an area in the Niedersimmental, stretching from Oberwil to Diemtigen. It is believed that they were the successors of the Lords of Erlenbach. Towards the end of the 15th century, the castle was abandoned and gradually fell into disrepair. Although a defensive tower still stood at the beginning of the 18th century, it was later used as a quarry and is no longer extant today.
