Weißenstein Castle (Ruin)

Around the year 1100, the Counts of Bogen began construction of Weißenstein Castle. After the extinction of this noble family in 1242, the castle passed into the possession of the Bavarian dukes. In 1308, Knight Eberwein von Degenberg was enfeoffed with the lordship, and from 1339/40, the castle was the property of the Degenberg family. During the Böckler War in 1468, Weißenstein was captured and burned by ducal troops, but subsequently rebuilt by the Degenbergers. Following the death of Hans Sigmund von Degenberg in 1602 and the consequent extinction of the Degenberg line, the castle fell to Elector Maximilian I.
