Wenigenburg Castle (Ruin) (Amöneburg)

Archaeological findings suggest that the Wenigenburg was likely built in the second half of the 12th century, possibly as an advanced fortification for Amöneburg Castle. The first written mentions as “parvus castrum” (small castle) appear in documents from 1248 and 1267. The castle was in the possession of Mainz burgmannen, including members of the families von Nordeck, Volpert, and von Trohe. In 1273, Hessian troops occupied the complex during conflicts between Landgrave Heinrich and Kurmainz, but Kurmainz managed to recapture it in 1278. After the establishment of the landgraves in Hesse around 1280, the castle lost its strategic importance.
