Werdenfels Castle (Ruin)
In Burgrain, a district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria, stands the ruin of Werdenfels, a spur castle above the Loisach Valley.
History+
The construction period of Werdenfels Castle is generally dated between 1180 and 1230. From 1249, the complex belonged to the Prince-Bishopric of Freising and served as the administrative center of the County of Werdenfels. In the 15th century, due to financial difficulties, the Prince-Bishopric was forced to mortgage the castle several times. Its structural condition deteriorated, leading to the relocation of the administrative seat in 1632. Subsequently, the castle began to decay, and from 1676, it was even used as a quarry. After secularization, the ruin became part of Bavaria and has been privately owned since 1822. Preservation and renovation work took place in the 20th century and continues to this day.
