The Werl Ruin, a protected remnant of a state castle, is located in the town of Werl in the district of Soest, North Rhine-Westphalia. Originally built as part of the town's fortifications, it serves as a backdrop for cultural events.

History+

The construction of Werl Castle was ordered on December 10, 1519, by Archbishop Hermann V von Wied of Cologne. Completed by 1522, the castle served as a residence for the archbishops during their stays in Werl until 1803. With a permanent garrison of about 100 soldiers, it also offered protection to the town's citizens in times of war.
