Wetterfeld Castle (Ruin)
The Wetterfeld Castle Ruin, also called the Old Castle, is the ruin of a moated castle at 364 meters above sea level in the center of Wetterfeld, a district of Roding in the Upper Palatinate district of Cham in Bavaria. Wetterfeld Castle is one of the few moated castles in the Upper Palatinate.
In 1118, the Diepoldinger ministerialis Gottfried von Wetterfeld, a member of the powerful Margrave family of Cham-Vohburg and brother of Abbot Reginboto of Reichenbach Monastery, is mentioned, and again in 1179 a Karl and Heinrich "de Weterinfeld".
In 1268, a Deinhardus is mentioned, who presumably was subordinate to the Bavarian dukes, and in 1283 the inheritance passed to the Wittelsbachs. Several changes of ownership followed. In 1428 and 1433, the castle was destroyed and then rebuilt.
The castle, now divided into four "Burghuten" (legally independent building complexes, separately assigned), was destroyed twice by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War and then rebuilt. After the castle increasingly fell into disrepair and was abandoned by its caretakers, the castle grounds were subdivided and built upon with private houses.
Layout+
The castle complex, bordered in the northeast by a village pond, still features a deep, brick-lined moat that could be filled in case of defense by a sluice.
Apart from the surrounding walls (with a zwinger and wall towers), the castle ruin only shows the large gate tower, which also served as a residential tower, made of quarry stone with corner quoins, with a large and a small passage with brick niches into which drawbridges could be lowered. Other parts of the castle have been incorporated into today's residential houses or have disappeared.
