The Wildeck Ruin is located in the Richelsdorf Mountains in Hesse. Today, only a few traces of the original 13th-century defensive structure are visible, as an 18th-century hunting lodge was built on its site, whose remains now characterize the current ruin.

History+

Wildeck Castle was probably built in the 11th century by Thuringian landgraves and was first documented in 1289 when Landgrave Albrecht II transferred it to his son Apitz. In 1301, the castle came into the possession of Fulda Abbey, leading to conflicts with the Diocese of Würzburg. After a brief occupation by Würzburg in 1316 and a swift recapture by Fulda, the likely destroyed castle was rebuilt. From 1337, it was a divided fief of the Lords of Trott and Boyneburg. Landgrave Hermann II of Hesse redeemed the castle from a pledge in 1406 and again enfeoffed the Lords of Trott. Despite a sale to Hermann II in 1413, the castle was pledged again in 1445.
