Wildeck Castle (Ruin)

After 1920, the castle warden of Wartburg, Hermann Nebe, visited the ruins and analyzed the building remains, which were still more clearly recognizable at the time.
"The castle complex is quite difficult to discern from the individual construction periods. It is oriented northwest-southeast along its main axis and is overlooked by the mountain ridge extending eastward into the valley, from which it is separated uphill by a deep neck ditch. [...] It still shows an outer rampart and ditch (now leveled), measuring approximately 360 meters in circumference. From this rises the high castle, girded by a Zwinger, which occupies approximately 120 meters in a rectangle, while the Zwinger itself has a circumference of about 180 meters. The aforementioned gate path, ascending through the Zwinger, leads to the high castle. The high castle is protected to the northwest by strong walls and still shows a rectangular tower stump. It seems to have consisted only of a palas, leaning against the wall to the northwest, measuring approximately 20:10 meters, and the castle courtyard. The palas has a cellar, and in the castle courtyard, a supposedly 40-meter-deep well steeply plunges into the interior of the mountain. Everywhere one can discover the work of earlier and later times in the merely leaning, not interlocked walls and the varying wall thicknesses." (Hermann Nebe 1925)

Only foundations of rectangular enclosing walls and a stone-covered well remain of the castle complex. The builders of the later hunting lodge used the ruin as a quarry. The now visible parts of the ruin mainly originate from the hunting lodge - a cellar on the north side - and the archway at the access path. All wall remains are maintained through private initiative with the help of donations from associations and citizens of the surrounding communities.
