Wildenburg Castle (Ruin) (Baar)

Wildenburg Castle was founded in the 13th century by a branch of the Lords of Hünenberg, who served as feudal tenants of the Counts of Kyburg and Habsburg. It functioned as the center of a newly developed clear-felling lordship and monitored traffic across the Lorze bridge. Originally, the complex likely consisted of a stone ring with wooden structures, later supplemented by a massive round keep and a palas. The castle was first documented in 1309 as the property of Gottfried von Hünenberg. After the Battle of Sempach in 1388, in which the Hünenbergs fought on the Habsburg side, it remains unclear whether Wildenburg, like their ancestral castle, was destroyed. The family was forced to sell their estates in the following decades and died out around 1450. The castle fell into disrepair and was used as a quarry in the 16th century. Initial excavations in 1938 uncovered parts of the keep, but inadequate conservation led to further decay, including a collapse in 1956. After the canton of Zug took ownership in 1978 and a proposed restoration was rejected, a comprehensive renovation was finally made possible in 1985 through a private initiative by the Pro Wildenburg association.

The Wildenburg ruin is located in the municipality of Baar in the canton of Zug, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 635 meters above sea level. It is perched on a rocky spur above the gorge formed by the Schwerzenbach and Lorze rivers.

Visitors can explore the Wildenburg ruin today. The surrounding walls, the palas, and the keep, whose impressive 3.5-meter wall thickness is visible at the entrance, are preserved, with the exception of a collapsed section in the northeast.
