The Winterstein Ruin, once a moated castle, is located in the Thuringian landscape. The first documented mention of the locality of Winterstein dates back to 1246.

History+

In 1307, a moated castle was built there by the Lords of Wangenheim. Another fortification, the Sommerstein, is still preserved as an archaeological monument south of the village. This second complex was located at the beginning of an old road that led to the Grenzwiese at Kleiner Inselsberg and from there into the Werra Valley towards Schmalkalden and Breitungen. During the Thirty Years' War, both the castle and the village suffered damage. By 1638, the castle had fallen into disrepair and was not rebuilt.
