Wulp Castle (Ruin) (Küsnacht)

The first mention of the name “Wulp” appears around 1460 in the Klingenberg Chronicle as “wurp by küssnacht”. Later chronicles from the 16th century, including those by Brennwald and Johannes Stumpf, solidified the current name. The name could be derived from the Old High German “hwarb” meaning “twisted hill” or from a family named Wulper, who farmed a property on the Wulpwiese around 1400. In 1267, Wulp Castle was besieged and destroyed by Count Rudolf of Habsburg and the city of Zurich during the Regensberg Feud. Archaeological excavations in 1920–1923, 1961–1962, and 1980–1982 uncovered the foundations of a multi-part castle complex, built in at least two, possibly three construction phases. Traces of an even older settlement from the 8th century, as well as pottery shards from the Late Bronze Age and Roman times, were also discovered. The ruin was placed under federal protection in 1923 and has undergone several renovations to ensure its preservation.

The Wulp ruin is located at an elevation of approx. 569 m above sea level in Küsnacht, in the Meilen district, Canton Zurich, Switzerland.

The Wulp ruin is open to visitors today and can be explored. The excavated wall remains and foundations offer insights into the former castle complex.
