The Zoppesmur ruin, also known as Leysiefen Castle, is an early to high medieval motte in the Leysiefen district of Leichlingen. Of this former defensive structure, today only earthworks and remnants of masonry remain.

History+

The Zoppesmur motte was presumably built around the year 1200 by the Bergisch knightly family Zobbe, who later renamed themselves de Leysiefen. In 1280, the castle passed into the possession of Count Adolf V of Berg. Since he already owned the nearby Haus Nesselrath Castle, the Zoppesmur motte had no further strategic importance for him. The transfer deed of 1280 is also the only known written mention of the castle, suggesting that it was abandoned and left to decay shortly after its acquisition.
