The Zwing Uri ruin in Silenen, Canton Uri, Switzerland, is a fascinating testament to medieval military architecture. Of the former castle complex, only the mighty tower base remains today, revealing a turbulent history and early settlement of the site.
History+
The origins of the complex date back a long way, as archaeological finds prove that the Flüeli was already settled around 1150. Around the year 1200, the existing farmstead was extended by an imposing tower. This tower castle was probably inhabited until the early 14th century and was owned by a local noble family. The name “Zwing Uri” first appears in the chronicle of the “Weisses Buch” and indicates a claim to sovereignty. According to tradition, the castle was destroyed during the freedom struggles of the people of Central Switzerland. In 1978, extensive excavations and restorations were carried out, contributing to its present preservation.
