Zwing Uri Castle (Ruin) (Silenen)
The Zwing Uri ruin in Silenen, Canton Uri, Switzerland, is a medieval military architectural site. Of the former castle complex, only the tower base remains today.
History+
Archaeological finds prove that the Flüeli was already settled around 1150. Around the year 1200, the existing farmstead was extended by a tower. This tower castle was probably inhabited until the early 14th century and was owned by a local noble family. The name “Zwing Uri” first appears in the chronicle of the “Weisses Buch” and indicates a claim to sovereignty. According to tradition, the castle was destroyed during the freedom struggles of the people of Central Switzerland. In 1978, excavations and restorations were carried out, contributing to its present preservation.
