Sabinenkloster

The Sabinenkloster was likely founded between 1235 and 1250 by Duke Barnim I of Pomerania, in close proximity to the Sabinenkirche, Prenzlau's oldest church. A document from 1250 records the transfer of patronage of the four town churches – St. Marien, St. Nikolai, St. Jacobi, and St. Sabini – to the penitent sisters of the Order of Blessed Mary Magdalene. This donation was confirmed in 1251 by the Brandenburg sovereign Johann I. The nuns were referred to as Magdalenerinnen, Augustinerinnen, Benedictines, and occasionally Cistercians in various documents, suggesting a changing monastic affiliation, possibly related to the Ascanian takeover of Prenzlau around 1250. The convent was led by an abbess, supported by a prioress and other officials. From the 14th century onwards, the monastery acquired extensive revenues from surrounding villages and mills through donations and endowments. Secularization occurred in 1543 during the Reformation, after which the monastic estate was leased as a manor from 1559. The Sabinenkirche was converted into a parish church. In the 18th century, parts of the former cloister buildings served as poorhouses. The city of Prenzlau finally acquired the Sabinenkloster manor in 1840.

The former monastic complex was situated on the northern bank of the Unteruckersee, south of the Sabinenkirche. It was located in the smaller new town, later known as Berliner Vorstadt, southwest of the larger old town of Prenzlau in the Uckermark, Brandenburg.

Of the medieval monastic buildings, only the eastern wall of St. Sabinen Church remains today. The church itself was almost completely rebuilt around 1803 after flood damage and continues to serve as a parish church.
