Sangarius Bridge
The Sangarius Bridge, also known as Justinian's Bridge, is an impressive testament to late Roman engineering in modern-day Turkey. It spans the Sakarya River and was built under Emperor Justinian to improve communication between Constantinople and the eastern provinces of the empire. Its considerable dimensions made it a much-noticed structure even in antiquity.
History+
The construction of the Sangarius Bridge was ordered by Emperor Justinian between 559 and 562 AD. It replaced a previously used pontoon bridge that could not withstand the strong currents of the river, often making the crossing impassable. The solid stone bridge was of great strategic importance as it was part of a crucial military road from Constantinople to the Persian border, an area where military conflicts repeatedly occurred under Justinian. Contemporary sources, including the historian Procopius and the poets Paulos Silentiarios and Agathias, document the construction and completion of the bridge.
Location+
The Sangarius Bridge is located in Turkey, in the Marmara region, Sakarya district, near the city of Adapazarı. It stands at an elevation of approximately 35 meters above sea level.
On site+
Today, the well-preserved Sangarius Bridge can be visited. Although the larger Sakarya River has shifted its course, the bridge still spans the smaller Çark Deresi.
