Basilica of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, Prüm

The origins of the Sankt-Salvator-Basilika date back to 721, when the Frankish noblewoman Bertrada founded a monastery on the Prüm. A second foundation occurred in 752 by King Pippin, who settled Benedictine monks from Meaux. In 1222, the monastery developed into an independent principality, which was, however, annexed by the Elector of Trier in 1576. From 1721, the reconstruction of the abbey buildings began. The Napoleonic secularization led to the final dissolution of the abbey in 1802. The current baroque church, which integrates the north tower of an older predecessor building from the 16th century, was built from 1721 by Johann Georg Judas. After the dissolution of the monastery, the abbey church became a parish church in 1802. In 1860, during renovation work, the remains of Emperor Lothar and the relics of the martyrs Primus and Felicianus were discovered, for which a tomb was later erected. During World War II, the church was severely damaged, especially by the collapse of the vault in 1945. The reconstruction was largely faithful to the original and was completed in 1950. In the same year, Pope Pius XII granted the church the title of a Basilica minor. Since the late 1990s, continuous restoration work has been carried out, culminating in a comprehensive interior renovation in 2018/19.

The Sankt-Salvator-Basilika is located in Prüm, a town in the West Eifel, which belongs to the Bitburg-Prüm region in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The Sankt-Salvator-Basilika currently serves as a parish church and, after extensive renovations, is also used for cultural events. It is an active place of worship and an important testament to regional history and architecture.
