Schallaburg Castle

The castle hill was already settled in Roman times. The first known owner, Sieghard von Schala, is mentioned in 1104. After the extinction of the Counts of Schala, the castle first appeared in a document in 1242 as "Feste Schala". From the 13th to the 15th century, it belonged to the Lords of Zelking. Between 1450 and 1614, Schallaburg was owned by the Lords of Losenstein, who advanced its transformation into a Renaissance castle. Under Hans Wilhelm von Losenstein, the castle became a center of Protestantism in Lower Austria in the 16th century. After his death, the property passed to the Lords of Stubenberg due to over-indebtedness, and later, in 1660, for religious reasons, to the Kletzl von Altenach family. In 1762, Bartholomäus III. von Tinti acquired the castle.
