Schelmenburg Castle (Bergen-Enkheim)

The exact period of the Schelmenburg's origin is difficult to determine due to later reconstructions. Archaeological findings suggest a wooden motte-and-bailey castle from the 12th or 13th century as the earliest structure. The first documented mention of a Schelm von Bergen dates back to 1194. In the 14th century, the Schelm von Bergen family fell under the influence of the Lords of Hanau, to whom they had to cede the castle as a fief from 1354. Due to conflicts with the city of Frankfurt, the castle was occupied several times, including in 1381/82 and 1389. Around 1500, an outer moat was constructed to protect the economic buildings. In 1700, the current Baroque moated castle was built on the foundations of the former core castle, after the original building had been demolished.
