A Pro Castle
The moated castle A Pro is situated near Lake Lucerne in Seedorf, Canton Uri, Switzerland. It combines a residential building and decorative defensive elements from the Renaissance period.
History+
Schloss A Pro was built between 1556 and 1558 by Jakob a Pro, a treasurer and chief magistrate from Uri, who was ennobled for his military merits. He acquired a property free of feudal rights to erect a residence there. After his death in 1562, his son Peter a Pro inherited the estate. Peter, also a chief magistrate and diplomat, transformed the castle in 1578 into a charitable foundation for the poor, known as the Apro Fideicommiss, which owned the property until 1959. Between 1891 and 1896, the castle underwent its first renovation and briefly served as a rectory. In 1959, the Canton of Uri acquired the castle, renovated it again, and opened it to the public in 1967.
