Aarau Castle, often referred to as Schlössli, is a structure in Aarau, Switzerland. It is located on the northeastern edge of the old town and is considered the oldest preserved building in the city, with origins dating back to the 13th century. Today, it houses the Aarau City Museum.

History+

The origins of Aarau Castle date back to shortly after 1236/37, just a few years before the founding of the city of Aarau by the Counts of Kyburg. After the extinction of the Kyburg family in 1263, the castle came into the possession of the Habsburgs. In 1334, it was first documented as “the old tower” to distinguish it from a younger tower. Its inhabitants changed frequently, including knightly families such as the Lords of Kienberg and later bourgeois families.
