Achberg Castle

The baroque Achberg Castle is located in the southernmost part of the Ravensburg district in the Baden-Württemberg municipality of Achberg.

The predecessor building of the current 17th-century castle, a medieval fortified castle, gave its name to the Lordship of Achberg. In 1691, the Landkomtur Franz Benedikt von Baden acquired the Lordship of Achberg for the Teutonic Order. In accordance with his noble status, he had the then castle expanded between 1693 and 1700. For example, the castle's ballroom was adorned with rich stucco work. Its ceiling is today one of the most detailed in southern Germany. Subsequently, however, the castle lost importance, as the knightly order used the complex only rarely until 1805. Today, the Order's coat of arms above the castle's entrance portal bears witness to its time under the Teutonic Order.

In 1806, as part of the secularization, Achberg first came into the possession of the Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen and subsequently belonged to Prussia from 1849 as its southernmost part. Until 1982, Achberg Castle was privately owned by the House of Hohenzollern. Its sale subsequently made it the object of building speculation, before the Ravensburg district acquired it in 1988.

The Fördergemeinschaft zur Erhaltung des Schlosses Achberg e. V. (Association for the Preservation of Achberg Castle) successfully campaigned for a comprehensive renovation and restoration of the complex from 1989 to 1994.
