In the southernmost part of the Ravensburg district in Baden-Württemberg stands Achberg Castle, a Baroque palace. It is known for its stucco work and history, ranging from a medieval fortified castle to its current role as a cultural center.

History+

The origins of the current castle lie in a medieval fortified castle that gave its name to the Lordship of Achberg. In 1691, the lordship came into the possession of the Teutonic Order when Landkomtur Franz Benedikt von Baden acquired it. Between 1693 and 1700, he had the then-castle extensively expanded and adorned with stucco, including the ceiling of the ballroom. After 1805, the castle lost its significance for the Order, and in the course of secularization in 1806, it first fell to the Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, and later to Prussia.
