Achleiten Castle

Achleiten Castle is a castle in the Lower Austrian district of Amstetten. It is located in the northwest of Limbach, a cadastral community of Strengberg.

Even before 1011, the Bavarian Benedictine monastery of Tegernsee owned properties in the municipality. Through an exchange of goods with the German King Henry II, it was able to increase its territories by 60 royal hides. The monastery established its Achleiten lordship here, the center of which was the castle, which Georg Matthäus Vischer drew in 1672. Emperor Henry IV visited the lordship in 1508.

The complex, which was fortified with towers, was located near the Danube and was constantly threatened by floods. From 1727 to 1734, Abbot Gregor I Plaichshirn therefore had the present castle built on the safe site of a farmhouse. It served the Tegernsee Benedictines as a summer residence until 1803. In 1836, it came into the possession of the Barons of Blomberg. They had the castle chapel demolished. The ecclesiastical objects were handed over to the local priest. For example, the altarpiece of Saint Nicholas hangs in the chapel of today's municipal kindergarten.

In 1861, the last building component, a round tower, was demolished. In 1894, the castle was sold to Jaromir von Skoda, the brother of the founder of the Skoda Works. The Barons of Weichs eventually inherited the estate and are still the owners of the property today.
