Achleiten Castle

The origins of the area where Achleiten Castle stands date back to the Tegernsee dominion, before it became a fief of Kremsmünster Abbey around 1200 via the Berchtesgaden provostry. Achleiten was first documented in 1189 with Bernhard von Achleiten. The Achleitner family, who were enfeoffed by the abbey as "single-shielded knights," played a role in the region. In 1303, the castle passed into the possession of the sovereign and was granted as a fief to the Wallseer family. After further changes of ownership, including the Stadler von Stadlkirchen and Lerbühler families, Achleiten came into the hands of the Sinzendorff family in 1377, remaining in their possession until 1602. Through the marriage of Appolonia von Sinzendorff to Erhard von Grienthal, the complex, by then converted into a castle, passed to the Grienthal family. In the 17th century, the castle chapel was rebuilt after a fire.
