In the Affaltrach district of Obersulm stands Affaltrach Castle, a structure that was originally a commandery building of the Order of St. John. It acquired its form in the 18th century and is now part of a castle winery.

History+

The castle's origins date back to the 13th century, when the Order of St. John acquired properties in Affaltrach in 1278 and received patronage rights over the local church in 1289. In the same year, the first commandery house was built, which was expanded into a castle in the 14th and 15th centuries and renovated between 1480 and 1507. In December 1805, the castle fell to Elector Friedrich of Württemberg. The last commander, Franz Konrad Josef Freiherr von Truchsess, who had the castle renovated in 1788 and gave it its current appearance, acquired it in 1812 as compensation.
