Ahaus Castle, once the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Münster, is today a structure in the western Münsterland region. Originally a medieval castle, it was transformed into a hunting lodge and now houses a museum as well as a Technical Academy.

History+

The origins of Ahaus Castle date back to the early 11th century, when a castle of the noble lords of Ahaus was built on this site. In 1406, the complex passed to the Prince-Bishop of Münster. Under Prince-Bishop Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg-Lenhausen, the conversion into a hunting lodge took place between 1688 and 1695, based on designs by Ambrosius von Oelde. Following destruction during the Seven Years' War, Johann Conrad Schlaun added a central risalit with a grand staircase to the garden facade between 1765 and 1767. Through the Imperial Deputation Act of 1803, the castle became the property of the Princes Salm-Salm and Salm-Kyrburg, with Prince Moritz zu Salm-Kyrburg residing here.
