Ahaus Castle
Ahaus Castle is a former residential castle of the Prince-Bishops of Münster in Ahaus.
The castle, built at the beginning of the 11th century, passed from the noble lords of Ahaus to the Prince-Bishop of Münster in 1406. On behalf of Prince-Bishop Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg-Lenhausen, a hunting lodge was built there from 1688 to 1695 according to plans by Ambrosius von Oelde. After the destruction in the Seven Years' War, Johann Conrad Schlaun added a central risalit with a grand staircase to the garden front from 1765 to 1767.
Through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, the castle came into the possession of the Princes Salm-Salm and Salm-Kyrburg. Prince Moritz zu Salm-Kyrburg resided here as regent in the Principality of Salm. After initially renting it in 1819, the Lower Rhenish tobacco manufacturer family Oldenkott acquired the castle in 1829.
In March 1945, the castle was destroyed by a bombing raid and completely burned out. After the war, the district of Ahaus acquired the ruin. During the reconstruction of the castle, Eugen Senge-Platten was tasked with furnishing the castle with works of art. The park became the property of the city of Ahaus; today, the castle is the seat of the Technical Academy Ahaus. In addition, the castle houses the Gatehouse and School Museum.

Ahaus Castle is located directly in the city center of Ahaus in western Münsterland. Adjacent is the new pedestrian zone of Ahaus with the market square and the Tourist Information. The nearest motorway is the A31.
Cycling+
Ahaus Castle is a stop on the 100 Castles Route through Münsterland. Ahaus Castle is also integrated into the honeycomb-shaped Münsterland cycle path system via cell 52. From May to October, the so-called Fietsenbus, a bus with a bicycle trailer that allows bicycles to be taken along in the Borken district, runs through Ahaus.
