Ahrensburg Castle

The origins of Ahrensburg Castle likely date back to the 12th century, when it was probably built as a fortified castle. The complex was first documented in 1385, at which time it was owned by the Counts of Schaumburg. Around 1560, a conversion from a castle to a palace took place, which included the addition of wings, stables, and an inner courtyard. At the end of the 16th century, after losing his bishopric, Hermann, Bishop of Minden, resided at Ahrensburg as a manor house. During this era, the main building with its great hall and stair tower, as well as the current half-timbered structure, were built.
