Aichberg Castle

After military conflicts with Hungary, the border of the Holy Roman Empire was established along the Lafnitz around 1043, and a defensive belt of castles was built by the end of the 12th century. Konrad von Aichberg was first documented in 1250 and is considered the founder of today's district of Kleinschlag. Aichberg Castle itself was first mentioned in 1374. Wulfing von Aichberg had the stone castle chapel built in 1378, which now serves as the parish church. At the beginning of the 15th century, Aichberg came into the possession of the Welzer family, who sold it to the Steinpeiß family in 1412. This family held Aichberg as their ancestral seat until 1772. After the death of Karl Joseph Count von Steinpeiß, the dominion passed by will to his cousin, Maximilian Baron von Waidmannsdorf.
